Hawk Hill
A classic Marin climb. The first 10 miles are easy, then it gets steep. The views are worth the effort.
About This Route
Hawk Hill is one of those rides that every Bay Area cyclist needs to do at least once. The route starts with a crossing of the Golden Gate Bridge, immediately immersing you in one of the most iconic cycling experiences in the world. From there, it's a gentle spin through the Marin Headlands before the road kicks up toward the summit.
The climb to Hawk Hill is short but punchy, with gradients that reach double digits near the top. But the reward is one of the most breathtaking viewpoints in all of California. From the summit, you look straight down at the Golden Gate Bridge with the San Francisco skyline behind it, the Marin Headlands falling away to the Pacific on your left, and the rugged coastline stretching north.
This is a Strava segment favorite, and on any given weekend you'll see riders sprinting up the final pitch to set a PR. But it's equally enjoyable at a leisurely pace - the scenery deserves your attention.
The descent back is fast and fun, with sweeping turns and smooth pavement. Keep your speed in check, though - there's often tourist traffic and the road narrows in places.
Tips
- Cross the Golden Gate Bridge on the west side (right side heading north) - it's the cyclist lane
- The Headlands road can be foggy and cold even when it's warm in Marin - bring a layer
- Watch for tourist traffic on the climb and descent - cars don't always expect cyclists
- The final pitch to the summit is the steepest - save energy for it
- On clear days, bring a camera - the view from the top is unforgettable
