Saturday Roasters

Saturdays 9:15 AM
Distance 40 miles
Elevation 3,200 ft
Difficulty Race
Meeting Point Java Hut

An intense 40-mile loop leaving from Java Hut. A favorite for local pros. Prepare to suffer - this is one of Marin's fastest group rides.

About This Ride

The Saturday Roasters is the marquee group ride of Marin County. Every Saturday morning, a peloton of the area's strongest riders assembles at Java Hut in Fairfax for 40 miles of pure suffering. This is race-pace from the gun - there is no warmup, no regrouping, and no mercy.

The route heads out through West Marin, tackling a series of climbs that shatter the group into pieces. Local pros, elite amateurs, and ambitious weekend warriors all mix together in what amounts to an unofficial weekly road race. The climbing is relentless, and the descents are fast and technical.

For many Marin cyclists, being able to hang with the Roasters is a major milestone. The ride attracts some seriously strong riders, and finishing with the lead group is an achievement. But even getting dropped halfway through is a world-class workout.

After the ride, survivors regroup at Java Hut for coffee and war stories. The post-ride hangout is as much a part of the tradition as the ride itself.

Tips

  • This is not a beginner ride - you should be comfortable riding at 22+ mph in a group before showing up
  • Eat a proper breakfast at least 90 minutes before the start
  • Position yourself near the front before the first climb - once the group splits, it's very hard to chase back
  • The post-ride coffee at Java Hut is mandatory - bring cash
  • If you're not sure you're ready, try the Sunday Divine (same route, controlled pace) first
